Compression Applications Download Instructions
Last June, in your own article iTunes 2 for Mac OS 9 , they made available for downloading the iTunes 2.0.4 installer so that other vintage Mac enthusiasts could install the last version of iTunes running on Mac OS 9 (it doesn't seem to be accessible from Apple's website anymore). Although I'm an extremely inexperienced user of the Mac, maybe your experiences with PC to Mac may help you a bit. A WARNING to users with a Mac II, IIx, IIcx, or SE/30 that desire to run in 32-bit addressing mode (more than 8 MB RAM): Stuffit Exapnder 5 is INCOMPATABLE with Apple's 32-bit System Enabler. MODE32 7.5 is compatable with System 7.1 running System Update 3.0 and Stuffit Expander 5. (I currently have MODE32 7.5 running on your SE/30).
Stuffit Expander enables you to decompress files with a quick drag and drop, or through the file menu, and the program manages more than 30 file formats. As it unzips your files rAR Expander will then show a short progress bar. However, RAR Expander WOn't attempt to restore corrupted or damaged archive files. RAR Expander is a powerful and effectual tool for decompressing RAR archives on Mac.
Improved Image and Audio Compression: Lots of StuffIt Deluxe's users are graphics professionals working with big images, which is Smith Micro has put significant effort into lossless compression of image formats. In StuffIt Deluxe 2010, the picture compressor can now farther compress TIFF and PNG files losslessly. Usually the Mac OS X Archive Utility manages this.
From the winter of 2008, the website became various tools which have nothing in common using the StuffIt tradition along with branded with Smith Micro logos. Finally, when Apple released Mac OS X 10.4 'oeTiger'?, the business discontinued including StuffIt Expander with the operating system. It really did its job with a minimum of fuss, and opened some obscure Mac archive formats that nothing else would touch. Loathe it... StuffIt wastes your time... they do not have time to waste... they only have time to enter "expand sit files without stuffit" into Google and stumble upon a spot-on post by a person who also hates it. Yet it actually is not any different than what you're used to doing on a Windows machine.
StuffIt Expander can enlarge over 30 formats including schism, RAR, 7zip, StuffIt and segmented archives. Stuffit Expander is a free and easy-to-use decompression utility which comes with support for over 30 different archive formats such as ZIP, RAR, 7Z, PITCH, SIT, SITX and more. Additionally, Stuffit Expander enables protected ZIP archives to open that use strong 512-bit or AES 256-bit encryption.
It was annoying, but there was practically no need to download anything from their site because Apple included a reasonably up-to-date copy of the DropStuff encoder along with StuffIt Expander & archiver with all the Mac OS. But since Apple stopped including StuffIt Expander withOS X in Tiger, it is now crucial to download the application from Smith Micro every now and then. Version 5.5 is the last that will run on Macintosh 680x0.
